Mom's time in Australia

Day 1-Mom gets in late afternoon. Quick trip to show her around the area. 9pm game versus Perth at Baseball Park.
Day 2- Get up early go to Dunsborough/Margaret River. Bakeries, Beach, Fish and Chips, Brewery, kangaroos, Lighthouse. This is the same area that I went after Christmas and spent a week at. It is a beautiful region and Mom seemed to really enjoy it down here.
Day 3- More time at the beach down south, Another Brewery and a couple of Wineries. Make short drive to the actual town of Margaret River. Do some souvenir shopping. Go over to the mouth of the Margaret River where it meets the Indian Ocean, watch some surfing (both regular and kite surfing). Drive back to Perth, on the way home stop in the town of Busselton and see the longest Pier in the Southern Hemisphere (exciting!)
Day 4- Wake up and go down to Fremantle, which is a port town just south of Perth. Very popular tourist destination. Get some breakfast and then go to the Fremantle Markets which is basically a farmers market. Great spot to get some more souvenirs and fresh fruit, a lot of locally made and grown merchandise. After Fremantle, go all the way up to Swan Districts so I can coach my U-16 team and they have a come from behind 9-5 victory.
Day 5- Baseball all day. Arrive at South Perth Baseball Club at 8am. Coach my u-18 team to a 15-1 victory. Then have a state league double header starting at 12 30. The whole club was playing Wembley which is the worst club in the league. Their state League team was 1-28 going into the game. We swept the doubleheader, and only gave up 1 hit in the 2 games combined (14 total innings due to mercy rule in game 2). I got to throw 2 hitless innings in game 2, it was nice having the opportunity to throw while Mom was here. After the games, we went out to dinner with Marshall and Quokka and his girlfriend Cherie for some Indian food, which was very good.
Day 6- Mom finally lets me sleep in. We took the ferry out to a place called Rottnest Island. There is no vehicle traffic on the island and is a mini vacation spot for the people in Perth. It was a 30 minute boat ride over. We rented bikes (which is what you do there) and spent about 3 hours riding around the island on the paths. They had some beautiful beaches and also a little rodent like animal called quokka’s all over the place. It was good day trip. For dinner we were tired of eating out, so we stopped at the local fish market and got some snapper and king prawns for me to grill on the bbq. It was very good.
Day 7- Mom’s last day in Australia. We spent the first part of the day going to the local beaches in Perth, it was sort of windy and overcast (which is a big change) so there wasn’t much of a crowd to compete with. After the beaches, we went up to Kings Park. Which is a huge park (1000 acres?) that overlooks the city and has a beautiful botanical garden. Mom really liked it up there and wished that we would have spent some more time searching around up there. They also had an aboriginal art gallery/gift shop on the site which had a lot of neat stuff in it. After that it was time to return the rental car, then I went to practice and by the time I got home took Mom to the airport and sent her back on her way to the Land of Snow.
It was a very fun week, and I’m really glad Mom got the opportunity to come visit. She didn’t like the heat too much, as it’s a pretty big change going from 35 degrees and snowy to extreme sun and 95 degrees every day.

Back to being a player

So I finally made my return to the pitching mound, as I threw 5 innings of relief against are biggest rivals the Perth Baseball Club. It was a lot of fun to be out there playing and not just watching. Unfortunately I entered the game and we were already down 10-0. On the Brightside it gave me the opportunity to come in and get back into the “groove” of pitching. It was good I was able to extend out to 5 innings, and hopefully get my pitch count up enough to make a couple of starts down the stretch. I gave up a leadoff homerun to the first guy I faced but was pretty good after that. Only giving up 3 other hits and no runs. Final line score- 5ip, 4 hits, 1R, 5K’s, 1BB. With the loss to Perth it sort of makes Wednesday night’s game a must win, as we are in a 3 way tie for 5th place, and 2 games behind 4th place, we have some ground to make up. As for my two other teams, my U-18 are battling some pitching injuries and have dropped 2 straight 1 run losses. We have secured a spot in the final 4 teams, and I am confident they can make a run at the championship. My U-16 had a great 9-3 win over the 2nd place team on Saturday, following a close 12-11 loss the week before to the 1st place team. We have only 2 regular season games left at the junior levels, U-18’s have clinched a playoff spot, and the U-16’s will miss a playoff spot by one position, but it is good to see them playing good baseball and getting better. …….Looking forward to having my Mom down here, she gets here in 2 days. I think she will really enjoy herself, and I’ve tried to plan some fun things to do, and give her a good taste of what Western Australia has to offer. We will spend 2 full days and 1 night, down South of Perth in the Margaret River Region (where I spent 10 days over X-mas time). It should be good, I’ll try and get plenty of pictures and put them on here………..So Australia like most of the rest of the world works on the metric system, so my whole time down here I’ve had to convert liters to gallons, Kilometers to miles, and kilo’s to pounds. It really hasn’t been a big deal, but when I go to lift at the gym it is a real pain in the ass trying to do the math in your head and remembering the next week what weight you did the week before. I guess the logical thing to do would be to just write it down!
-My Australia “slang” definition sheet is all used up now, and I really don’t have anymore to offer but I picked up on another one this week.
-“Ranga”- This is what they call Red headed kids. Its short for Orangutan, obviously associating the kids hair color to that of the big orange primate. (See the picture)

Living the Dream

Life is pretty rough right now in Perth! But not really, my days are still really only consumed with getting up and working out and then going down to the baseball club in the evenings to play and coach. My arm still isn't doing very good. I've been seeing a physical therapist the last couple of weeks, and I was surprised when she thought my elbow pain is result of possibly having a bulging disk in my neck. Definitely not what I expected but have been doing some exercises and I seem to be seeing some results. Am going to try and get back into another game this weekend, hopefully the old wing holds up. In my last trip to the physical therapist I got acupuncture done on my arm as well, I've always wanted to try it and it seemed to have a good effect. Pretty wierd looking down and seeing about 7 needles sticking out of your arm, I felt like I'd been hit by a porcupine. Felt like I could related to my dumbass dogs when they get into them.......I thought I would mention what Australian Currency is like. They have a system that is similar to Canadas where they have both dollar and two dollar coins. Then your standard 5, 10, 20 and 50 dollar notes. Coins on the other hand go 5, 10, 20, 50, dollar and two dollars. No pennies or quarters. So when you buy something at the store or market, they always round the coin amount to the closest multiple of 5. It is pretty nice not having a bunch of pennies but is a pain in the ass getting back dollar and two dollar coins instead of paper bills............The Super Bowl this year was awesome! I was able to get up early Monday morning here and go watch it. Kickoff was at 8 am Monday morning. We went down to the local casino and watched the game with a few other imports at the Sports Bar in the casino. I laid a few bets on the game and ended the day only down $10 dollars on 8 different bets. Can't complain.
